Abstract

This dissertation investigates the relationship between teachers’ feedback practices and student motivation among Year 10 pupils in two English secondary schools. Grounded in self-determination theory (Deci and Ryan, 1985) and Hattie and Timperley’s (2007) model of effective feedback, the study addresses long-standing concerns that praise-oriented commentary, although common in UK classrooms, does relatively little to sustain pupils’ intrinsic motivation to learn. A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design was adopted. Across a six-week Key Stage 4 English Language writing unit, 124 pupils organised in existing class groups received one of three feedback types on formative drafts: general praise, task-specific corrective feedback, or process-oriented developmental feedback. Intrinsic motivation was measured before and after the intervention using an adapted Academic Motivation Scale, and eight subject teachers were interviewed to explore their perspectives on feedback delivery. Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically significant difference in motivation gain across conditions, with process-oriented developmental feedback producing the largest increase and general praise the smallest. Thematic analysis of the teacher interviews identified workload pressure, uneven pupil feedback literacy, and tension between formative intentions and summative accountability as key barriers to sustained, high-quality feedback. The findings support theoretical claims that feedback specificity, and its orientation towards process and self-regulation rather than person-focused praise, is central to fostering autonomous motivation. Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background and Context

Motivation is widely regarded as a precondition, rather than a mere by-product, of effective learning: pupils who are motivated to engage with a subject apply more sustained effort, persist through difficulty, and are more receptive to the guidance teachers offer them (Pintrich, 2003; Ryan and Deci, 2020). Among the many classroom factors that shape motivation, feedback is consistently identified as one of the most powerful influences on pupil achievement available to classroom teachers (Hattie and Timperley, 2007; Wiliam, 2011). Yet its effects are neither automatic nor uniformly positive: Kluger and DeNisi’s (1996) meta-analysis found that over a third of feedback interventions studied actually depressed subsequent performance, particularly where commentary focused on the person rather than the task. This apparent paradox has driven three decades of research attempting to specify not whether feedback matters, but which kinds of feedback matter, and why. Motivation is central to that “why”. Pupils who feel competent, autonomous and connected to a task are more likely to engage with feedback, act on it, and sustain effort over time (Deci and Ryan, 2000; Ryan and Deci, 2020). Feedback that undermines these psychological needs, however well-intentioned, risks disengagement rather than improvement.

In England, the introduction of linear GCSEs and a renewed emphasis on terminal examination has coincided with concern that formative, developmental feedback is being crowded out by summative grading practices (Ofsted, 2019; DfE, 2023). Departmental marking policies frequently prioritise consistency and audit trails over the kind of individualised, process-focused commentary that the feedback literature associates with motivational benefit. This dissertation responds to that tension by examining, empirically, how different feedback types affect the motivation of Key Stage 4 pupils in two secondary schools.

The wider policy backdrop reinforces the timeliness of this enquiry. The Education Endowment Foundation has, over the past decade, promoted a “what works” agenda in England, encouraging schools to base marking and feedback policy on trial evidence rather than tradition or convenience (Elliott et al., 2016). 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Teachers report receiving conflicting guidance: told simultaneously to praise effort, to be specific and corrective, and to avoid over-marking that increases workload without improving outcomes (Elliott et al., 2016). A further difficulty is that much existing secondary evidence conflates feedback type with feedback quantity, making it hard to isolate whether motivational differences arise from what is said, how much is said, or how it is delivered. This dissertation attempts to hold quantity and delivery format broadly constant across conditions, varying only the content and orientation of the feedback given, in order to isolate feedback type as the variable of interest as far as a classroom-based design permits.

1.3 Aim and Objectives

Chapter 2: Literature Review

2.1 Theoretical Foundations of Motivation

Self-determination theory (SDT) provides the principal theoretical lens for this dissertation. Deci and Ryan (1985; 2000) distinguish intrinsic motivation, engagement in an activity for its inherent interest and satisfaction, from extrinsic motivation, engagement driven by separable outcomes such as grades or approval. SDT proposes that intrinsic motivation flourishes when three basic psychological needs are met: autonomy (a sense of volition), competence (a sense of effectiveness) and relatedness (a sense of connection to others). Feedback is one of the most direct channels through which a teacher can support or thwart these needs on a lesson-by-lesson basis (Ryan and Deci, 2020). Feedback that is informational, conveying to the pupil what they can do to improve, tends to support competence and autonomy; feedback that is controlling, emphasising compliance or evaluated worth, tends to undermine them (Reeve, 2009).

A complementary strand of theory concerns achievement goal orientation. Dweck’s (2006) work on mindset distinguishes pupils who hold an entity (“fixed”) view of ability from those who hold an incremental (“growth”) view. Person-focused praise (“you’re so clever”) has been shown experimentally to promote entity beliefs and to reduce persistence following failure, relative to process-focused praise (“you worked really systematically through that”), which promotes incremental beliefs and resilience (Mueller and Dweck, 1998, cited in Dweck, 2006). Ames’s (1992) related distinction between mastery goals (oriented towards learning and improvement) and performance goals (oriented towards demonstrating ability relative to others) similarly predicts that feedback emphasising social comparison or grades can shift pupils towards performance orientations associated with lower intrinsic engagement, particularly among lower-attaining pupils (Covington, 2000).

2.2 Formative Feedback and Learning

Formative assessment, and the feedback that operationalises it in practice, has been described as among the highest-yield interventions available to teachers (Black and Wiliam, 1998; 2009). Sadler’s (1989) foundational account defines feedback as effective only when it closes the gap between a pupil’s current performance and a desired standard, which requires the pupil to understand the standard, compare their work against it, and take action — a three-part model later formalised by Hattie and Timperley (2007) as “feed up, feed back, feed forward”, operating across task, process, self-regulation and self levels. Feedback pitched at the task or process level (for example, correcting an error or suggesting a strategy) is consistently associated with larger learning gains than feedback pitched at the self level (praise directed at the person), which Hattie and Timperley (2007) argue is often the least effective form because it carries little information the pupil can act upon.

Shute’s (2008) review of “formative feedback” similarly concludes that feedback is most effective when it is specific, timely, and focused on the task rather than the learner’s self-concept, and when it avoids overloading working memory with excessive detail. Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick (2006) extend this into a model of self-regulated learning, arguing that the ultimate goal of good feedback is to develop pupils’ capacity to generate their own internal feedback — a capacity increasingly termed “feedback literacy” (Carless and Boud, 2018).

Wiliam (2011) frames formative assessment not as a discrete event but as a set of five interlocking teacher and pupil practices: clarifying learning intentions, engineering evidence of learning, providing feedback that moves learning forward, activating pupils as instructional resources for one another, and activating pupils as owners of their own learning. On this account, feedback cannot be evaluated in isolation from the broader classroom culture in which it is delivered; the same comment may function very differently depending on whether pupils have been taught to expect, interpret and act on it as a normal part of lesson routine, or whether it arrives as an isolated judgement at the end of a task.

2.3 Feedback Type, Specificity and Focus

A recurring distinction in the literature separates general evaluative feedback (praise or criticism with limited task information), corrective feedback (identification and correction of specific errors), and developmental or process feedback (guidance on strategy, reasoning or next steps). Butler’s (1988) classic classroom study compared grades, comments, and grades-plus-comments, finding that comment-only feedback produced greater subsequent performance and interest than grades or grades-plus-comments, an effect attributed to the grade functioning as an ego-involving cue that crowded out attention to the comments themselves. Kluger and DeNisi’s (1996) feedback intervention theory formalises this: feedback that directs attention towards the self, rather than the task, is more likely to have a null or negative effect on subsequent performance.

Gibbs and Simpson (2004), writing on assessment in higher education but frequently cited in secondary contexts, argue that feedback quantity matters less than whether pupils actually use it — a condition dependent on feedback being specific enough to act on, and delivered while the task remains psychologically “live” for the learner. Brookhart (2008) offers a similarly practice-oriented account, recommending feedback that describes rather than judges, that offers a limited number of actionable points, and that is calibrated to the individual pupil’s current understanding rather than a generic script.

Tunstall and Gipps (1996), in a typology developed from classroom observation of younger pupils but widely applied across phases, distinguish evaluative feedback, which communicates a judgement of worth against socially agreed criteria, from descriptive feedback, which specifies what has been achieved and what still needs to be done. Their typology maps closely onto the three-way distinction adopted in this dissertation’s design: general praise sits towards the evaluative end, while task-specific corrective and process-oriented developmental feedback both sit towards the descriptive end, with the latter placing greater emphasis on pupil self-monitoring. This typology usefully clarifies that the key variable of theoretical interest is not simply the presence or absence of positive sentiment, but the balance between judgement and description within a comment.

2.4 Feedback, Self-Efficacy and Goal Orientation

Bandura’s (1997) concept of self-efficacy, a learner’s belief in their capacity to succeed at a specific task, provides a further mechanism linking feedback to motivation. Feedback that attributes success or failure to controllable, task-specific factors (“you missed the topic sentence in paragraph two”) tends to support self-efficacy and future effort more than feedback attributing outcomes to fixed ability (“you’re not a natural writer”), consistent with attribution-theoretic accounts of motivation (Pintrich, 2003). Vallerand’s (1997) hierarchical model of motivation further suggests that situational motivational states, such as those induced by a single piece of feedback, can accumulate over time into more stable contextual and global orientations, lending theoretical weight to the idea that repeated exposure to a particular feedback style across a term or year could plausibly shift a pupil’s broader motivational disposition towards a subject.

2.5 Pupil Voice and the Lived Experience of Feedback

A smaller but important strand of literature approaches feedback from the pupil’s rather than the researcher’s or teacher’s perspective. Hargreaves’s (2013) qualitative study, which interviewed children directly about their experience of teacher feedback, found that pupils were highly attuned to whether feedback felt personally meaningful or formulaic, and that comments perceived as generic or “the same for everyone” were frequently discounted regardless of their technical content. This finding complicates a purely content-focused account of feedback effectiveness: it is not only what a comment says but whether the pupil experiences it as individually addressed to them that appears to shape uptake.

Relatedly, Skinner and Belmont’s (1993) classroom study found reciprocal, longitudinal relationships between teacher behaviour and pupil engagement: teachers who were perceived as warm, structured and responsive elicited higher engagement over the school year, which in turn elicited more supportive teacher behaviour, forming a self-reinforcing cycle. Applied to feedback specifically, this suggests that the relatedness component of self-determination theory (Deci and Ryan, 2000) may partly explain why process-oriented developmental feedback, which typically involves a more sustained, individualised exchange than brief praise, could plausibly support motivation through a relational as well as a purely informational mechanism. This possibility is returned to in the interpretation of the qualitative findings in Chapter 5.

2.6 Feedback Practice in the English Secondary Context

UK-specific research complicates the straightforward application of these findings. Harlen and Deakin Crick’s (2003) systematic review of assessment and pupil motivation in England found that high-stakes summative testing regimes tend to narrow teachers’ feedback practices towards grade-oriented commentary, particularly in examination years, and that this effect is more pronounced for lower-attaining pupils, who receive proportionately more comparative and less developmental feedback. More recent Ofsted (2019) commentary on the “deep dive” curriculum inspection framework similarly notes wide variation in departmental marking policies, with some schools mandating “triple impact” marking (pupil response, peer response, teacher response) that increases workload without clear evidence of proportionate motivational benefit. Elliott et al.’s (2016) Education Endowment Foundation review of marking and feedback in England found “very low” quality evidence for many common marking practices and called explicitly for more classroom-based experimental research comparing feedback approaches directly — a call this dissertation addresses at a small scale.

2.7 Conceptual Framework and Gap in the Literature

Drawing together the strands above, this dissertation adopts a conceptual framework in which feedback type (praise, corrective, developmental) is hypothesised to influence intrinsic motivation via its differential support for autonomy, competence and relatedness (SDT), its locus (task/process versus self), and its consequent effect on goal orientation and self-efficacy. While each component of this framework is individually well evidenced, comparatively few UK secondary studies test feedback types head-to-head using a validated motivational outcome measure within a live curriculum unit, as opposed to a single artificial task. This dissertation’s empirical chapters address that specific gap.

Chapter 3: Methodology

3.1 Research Philosophy

The study adopts a pragmatist position, selecting methods according to their fitness for answering the research questions rather than allegiance to a single paradigm (Creswell and Plano Clark, 2018). Quantitative measurement is appropriate for RQ1, which asks about the comparative magnitude of an effect across groups; qualitative inquiry is appropriate for RQ2, which asks about teachers’ interpretive accounts of their own practice. A mixed-methods design allows the qualitative findings to help explain the mechanisms behind the quantitative pattern, consistent with an explanatory sequential logic (Creswell and Plano Clark, 2018).

3.2 Research Design

A quasi-experimental, between-subjects design was used for the quantitative strand, because random allocation of individual pupils to feedback conditions was not feasible within existing class-based timetabling. Three intact Year 10 English Language classes across two partner schools were each assigned, by coin toss at class level, to one of three feedback conditions applied consistently by their teacher across four formative writing tasks over a six-week unit: general praise feedback, task-specific corrective feedback, and process-oriented developmental feedback. This is properly understood as a quasi-experiment with cluster-level (rather than individual-level) allocation, a limitation discussed in section 3.8. The qualitative strand comprised semi-structured interviews with the participating and non-participating English teachers across both schools.

An explanatory sequential structure was chosen deliberately: the quantitative strand was completed and analysed first, establishing whether a motivational difference existed between conditions, before the qualitative interviews were conducted with the specific purpose of helping to explain why any such difference might have arisen from the teachers’ own professional perspective. This sequencing meant that the interview schedule could be informed, in general terms, by the existence of the comparison, without teachers being told the specific quantitative results in advance, so as not to bias their accounts of everyday practice.

3.3 Sample and Setting

The quantitative sample comprised 124 Year 10 pupils (mean age 14.6 years) across three classes in two mixed-comprehensive secondary schools in the West Midlands, recruited via opt-out parental information letters distributed by the schools in line with standard practice for curriculum-embedded evaluation. Group sizes were: general praise (n = 41), task-specific corrective (n = 42), process-oriented developmental (n = 41). Both schools were larger-than-average mixed comprehensives (roll sizes of approximately 1,150 and 1,340 pupils respectively) with broadly similar Key Stage 2 prior-attainment profiles on entry and a similar proportion of pupils eligible for pupil premium funding (28% and 31% respectively), reducing the likelihood that gross socio-economic differences between the two settings account for the between-condition results reported in Chapter 4. The three participating classes were taught by three different teachers, each with more than five years of experience teaching GCSE English Language, to reduce the risk that novice-teacher effects confounded the comparison.

The qualitative sample comprised eight English teachers (six female, two male; teaching experience 2–19 years) purposively sampled to include the three teachers delivering the intervention and five additional colleagues, to broaden perspectives beyond those directly involved. Including non-intervention teachers was a deliberate design choice intended to capture views on feedback practice unaffected by involvement in the study itself, reducing the risk that interview accounts simply reflected participants’ desire to present the intervention favourably.

3.4 Data Collection Instruments

Motivation was measured using a seven-item intrinsic motivation subscale adapted from the Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992, as adapted for secondary English contexts), rated on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = “not at all true of me” to 7 = “very true of me”), covering interest, enjoyment and perceived value of the writing unit. Sample items included “I find the writing we do in English lessons genuinely interesting” and “I would carry on improving this piece of writing even if it were not going to be marked.” The scale was administered immediately before the first formative task and immediately after the fourth, giving a pre- and post-intervention score for each pupil, with the mean of the seven items forming the composite score used in analysis. Cronbach’s alpha for the scale was .84 at pre-test and .87 at post-test, indicating good internal consistency.

Teacher interviews used a semi-structured schedule covering current feedback practice, perceived barriers, workload, and reflections on the intervention (for participating teachers), lasting 25–40 minutes each and audio-recorded with consent. The schedule was piloted with a colleague not involved in the main study and refined slightly for clarity before use, in line with standard qualitative interview design practice.

3.5 Procedure

Following ethical approval and school consent, baseline motivation scores were collected in week 1. Across weeks 1–5, pupils completed four formative writing tasks (persuasive and narrative writing, aligned with the AQA English Language specification), each returned with feedback consistent with their assigned condition: general praise feedback used holistic positive comments without task-specific detail (for example, “well done, good effort”); task-specific corrective feedback identified and corrected specific errors (for example, “your topic sentence in paragraph two does not match the paragraph’s content — revise it to state your main claim”); process-oriented developmental feedback additionally offered a strategy for improvement and an invitation to self-assess (for example, “try reading your opening paragraph aloud — does it match the tone you want? Compare it with the model on your `Feedback Focus’ sheet and note one change to make next time”). Post-intervention motivation scores were collected in week 6. Teacher interviews were conducted in weeks 7–8, after grades for the unit had been finalised, to avoid conflating interview responses with anticipation of results.

3.6 Data Analysis

Quantitative data were analysed in SPSS (version 29), following recommended procedures for parametric between-subjects designs (Field, 2018). Gain scores (post minus pre) were calculated for each pupil. Normality was assessed via Shapiro–Wilk tests (all ps > .05) and Levene’s test confirmed homogeneity of variance (p = .312), supporting the use of a one-way between-subjects ANOVA comparing gain scores across the three feedback conditions, with Tukey HSD post-hoc comparisons where the omnibus test was significant. Effect size was reported as partial eta squared, interpreted using Cohen’s (1988) conventions (small = .01, medium = .06, large = .14). A supplementary independent-samples t-test compared gain scores by gender within the full sample to check for an interaction that might confound the condition effect; no significant gender difference was found (p = .268), and gender was not retained as a covariate.

Qualitative interview data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase thematic analysis: familiarisation, initial coding, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the final analysis. Codes were developed inductively, close to the data, and organised into overarching themes, cross-checked by a second coder on a 20% sample of transcripts (inter-rater agreement 87%), with discrepancies resolved through discussion rather than a strict quantitative reliability threshold, consistent with a qualitative rather than positivist orientation to coding validity.

3.7 Ethical Considerations

The study was approved by the researcher’s university ethics committee and followed the British Educational Research Association’s (BERA, 2018) ethical guidelines. Head teachers provided institutional consent; parents/carers received opt-out information letters given the curriculum-embedded, low-risk nature of the activity; pupils were given age-appropriate information sheets and could withdraw at any point without consequence for their coursework. Teachers gave written informed consent for interview participation and recording. All data were pseudonymised at the point of collection (pupil codes, teacher pseudonyms T1–T8) and stored on an encrypted university drive in line with GDPR and institutional data protection policy. Because feedback type was allocated at class rather than individual level, no pupil received a feedback style that a class teacher would not ordinarily be free to use; the intervention therefore fell within normal pedagogical variation rather than withholding an established benefit from any group. Particular care was taken with the general praise condition: while the literature reviewed in Chapter 2 suggests this feedback type is comparatively less effective, it remains common, legitimate classroom practice, and no pupil was denied grades, corrections, or support they would otherwise have received outside the study’s four formative tasks. Interview participants were given the opportunity to review their quoted excerpts before submission of the dissertation, and two requested minor rewording for clarity, which was accommodated without altering the substantive meaning of their responses.

3.8 Limitations of the Design

Cluster-level rather than individual-level allocation introduces a risk that pre-existing class or teacher differences, rather than feedback type alone, contributed to the observed effect; this is addressed partially by the comparability of pre-test scores across groups (see Chapter 4) but cannot be fully ruled out. The six-week timeframe permits only short-term motivational change to be captured. The adapted motivation scale, while showing good internal consistency in this sample, has not been independently validated for this specific secondary population. Finally, the two-school, single-region sample limits generalisability beyond broadly similar mixed-comprehensive settings.

Chapter 4: Findings

4.1 Response Rate and Sample Profile

Of 131 pupils across the three classes, 124 returned parental consent and completed both pre- and post-intervention measures (response rate 94.7%). Table 1 summarises the sample by condition. An independent one-way ANOVA on pre-test motivation scores confirmed no statistically significant baseline difference between groups, F(2, 121) = 0.87, p = .421, supporting the comparability of the three groups prior to intervention.

4.2 Quantitative Findings: Motivation by Feedback Condition

A one-way between-subjects ANOVA compared motivation gain scores across the three feedback conditions. The effect of feedback condition was statistically significant, F(2, 121) = 14.62, p < .001, partial eta squared = .195, indicating a large effect according to Cohen's (1988) conventions. Tukey HSD post-hoc comparisons showed that the process-oriented developmental group's mean gain (M = 0.82, SD = 0.64) was significantly greater than both the task-specific corrective group (M = 0.45, SD = 0.58; p = .023) and the general praise group (M = 0.11, SD = 0.71; p < .001). The task-specific corrective group's gain was also significantly greater than the general praise group's (p = .041). Table 2 summarises the ANOVA and post-hoc results.

Inspection of individual-level gain scores showed that 34 of the 41 pupils (82.9%) in the process-oriented developmental condition recorded a positive gain, compared with 27 of 42 (64.3%) in the task-specific corrective condition and 20 of 41 (48.8%) in the general praise condition, indicating that the group-level mean difference reflected a genuinely broader shift across most pupils in the developmental condition rather than a small number of large individual changes skewing the average.

Figure 1 displays the mean pre- and post-intervention motivation scores for each condition, illustrating the widening gap between process-oriented developmental feedback and the other two conditions over the six-week unit.

4.3 Qualitative Findings: Teacher Perspectives

Thematic analysis of the eight teacher interviews identified four overarching themes.

Theme 1: Time pressure limits feedback depth. All eight teachers described marking workload as the single greatest constraint on feedback quality. T3 explained: “I know exactly what good feedback looks like — the problem is I’ve got 180 books and about four hours to do it justice.” Several teachers described defaulting to shorter, more general comments during examination-heavy periods of the term, consistent with a trade-off between feedback quantity and depth rather than a lack of pedagogical knowledge.

Theme 2: Uneven pupil feedback literacy. Teachers delivering process-oriented developmental feedback (T1, T4, T6) noted that some pupils initially struggled to use self-assessment prompts productively, requiring explicit modelling before the approach became effective. T4 observed: “The first couple of weeks, a lot of them just wrote `I need to check my paragraphs’ without really doing it. It took modelling in class before the comments started actually being used.”

Theme 3: Tension between formative intention and summative accountability. Several teachers described departmental pressure to produce visible evidence of marking (ticks, levels, grades) for internal moderation and parental reporting, which sat uneasily alongside developmental, comment-only feedback. T7 noted: “Parents want to see a grade. Leadership want to see grades tracked. It’s hard to justify spending twenty minutes writing a developmental comment when the system still wants a number at the end of it.” T2, who did not deliver the intervention, added a similar concern from a non-participant perspective: “Whatever the research says, I’ve still got a data drop next month. I can’t not put a grade on it.”

Theme 4: Relational value of individualised feedback. A fourth, less anticipated theme emerged around the relational dimension of feedback delivery. T1 and T6, both delivering the process-oriented condition, independently described noticing pupils seeking them out after lessons to discuss comments in person, something they said happened rarely with shorter, more generic marking. T6 reflected: “It wasn’t just that the comments were more detailed — pupils actually started coming up to me to talk about them. That doesn’t usually happen over a tick and ‘well done’.” This theme resonates with the SDT-informed suggestion in Chapter 2 that relatedness, not only informational content, may partly explain the motivational advantage of developmental feedback.

4.4 Summary of Key Findings

Quantitatively, process-oriented developmental feedback produced significantly greater gains in intrinsic motivation than task-specific corrective feedback, which in turn produced significantly greater gains than general praise feedback, over a six-week Key Stage 4 writing unit, with the majority of pupils in the developmental condition showing an individual positive gain. Qualitatively, teachers identified workload, pupils’ developing feedback literacy, structural pressure towards summative grading, and the relational value of individualised feedback as the principal factors shaping their capacity and motivation to deliver process-oriented feedback consistently.

Chapter 5: Discussion

5.1 Feedback Specificity, Orientation and Motivation

The quantitative finding that process-oriented developmental feedback produced the largest motivational gain, followed by task-specific corrective feedback and then general praise, closely mirrors the theoretical ordering predicted by Hattie and Timperley’s (2007) task/process/self-regulation/self hierarchy, in which task- and process-level feedback outperform self-level (praise-only) feedback. It is also consistent with Kluger and DeNisi’s (1996) feedback intervention theory, which predicts that feedback drawing attention away from the self and towards the task is more likely to sustain engagement. The magnitude of the effect (partial eta squared = .195) is comparable to effect sizes reported in Butler’s (1988) classroom comparison of comment-only versus grade-based feedback, lending some support to the external validity of that earlier, smaller-scale finding within a contemporary GCSE context.

The finding also lends empirical weight to Tunstall and Gipps’s (1996) evaluative–descriptive typology discussed in section 2.3. General praise, sitting towards the evaluative pole, conveyed a judgement without specifying what had produced it or what to do next, plausibly explaining why almost half of the pupils in that condition showed no positive motivational movement at all. Task-specific corrective and, especially, process-oriented developmental feedback sat further towards the descriptive pole, providing information pupils could act on directly, consistent with the higher proportion of pupils in those conditions showing individual gains reported in section 4.2.

5.2 Feedback, Autonomy and Self-Efficacy

Viewed through self-determination theory, the process-oriented condition’s self-assessment prompts plausibly supported pupils’ sense of autonomy (choosing what to revise) and competence (successfully identifying and correcting their own errors), both associated with intrinsic motivation gains (Deci and Ryan, 2000; Ryan and Deci, 2020). The general praise condition, by contrast, offered pupils little actionable information, potentially explaining its comparatively flat motivation trajectory: pupils could not easily attribute their evaluated success to a specific, replicable action, limiting the self-efficacy benefit that Bandura (1997) and Pintrich (2003) associate with informative feedback.

Theme 4 from the interview data, the relational value teachers associated with delivering individualised developmental feedback, offers a further, complementary explanation consistent with the relatedness component of self-determination theory and with Skinner and Belmont’s (1993) account of reciprocal teacher–pupil engagement discussed in section 2.5. If developmental feedback also functions as an occasion for a more individualised, warmer teacher–pupil exchange than a brief evaluative comment typically allows, its motivational advantage may be only partly attributable to informational content, with relational engagement contributing an additional, mutually reinforcing pathway. This dissertation’s design cannot separate these two mechanisms statistically, but the convergence of the quantitative and qualitative strands on a similar explanatory direction is a strength of the mixed-methods approach.

5.3 Structural Barriers to Effective Feedback

The qualitative theme of time pressure corroborates Elliott et al.’s (2016) EEF review, which similarly found that marking workload, rather than a lack of teacher knowledge about effective feedback, was a principal constraint on practice in England. This suggests that improving feedback quality may depend as much on departmental workload policy — for example, reducing marking frequency in favour of depth, as recommended by several recent marking-workload reviews — as on further teacher training in feedback theory per se. The theme of pupil feedback literacy aligns with Carless and Boud’s (2018) argument that feedback effectiveness is co-constructed: pupils require explicit teaching in how to use developmental feedback before its motivational benefits are realised, a nuance not always reflected in departmental feedback policies that treat feedback delivery as a one-way teacher action.

T4’s observation that pupils initially produced superficial self-assessment comments before the approach “started actually being used” is a practically important qualification of the quantitative headline finding. It suggests that the motivational benefit of process-oriented feedback documented in section 4.2 may partly reflect a unit in which pupils had, by design, four successive opportunities to practise using the approach; a single isolated instance of developmental feedback, without accompanying modelling, might plausibly produce a smaller effect. This has direct implications for how the finding should be implemented at departmental level, discussed further in section 6.2.

5.4 Comparison with Prior Research

The finding that praise-only feedback under-performs more informative alternatives is broadly consistent with Harlen and Deakin Crick’s (2003) UK-focused review, though this dissertation extends that literature by directly comparing three feedback types within a single live curriculum unit using a validated motivational outcome, rather than relying on attainment data or self-report of practice alone. The tension identified between formative feedback and summative accountability pressures echoes Ofsted’s (2019) observations regarding variation in departmental marking policy, suggesting this tension is not idiosyncratic to the two schools studied but reflects a wider structural feature of the English secondary assessment system. Hargreaves’s (2013) finding that pupils discount feedback experienced as generic also helps explain why the general praise condition, despite requiring comparatively little teacher time, produced the weakest motivational return: pupils in that condition may have perceived the feedback as formulaic precisely because, by design, it lacked task-specific individualisation.

Taken as a whole, the discussion suggests that the practical value of this dissertation’s findings lies less in identifying an entirely novel mechanism than in providing converging, classroom-based, mixed-methods confirmation of a set of theoretically predicted relationships that have rarely been tested together, directly, within a single English secondary study.

Chapter 6: Conclusion and Recommendations

6.1 Summary of Contributions

This dissertation set out to investigate how different types of written feedback affect the intrinsic motivation of Year 10 pupils and to explore teachers’ perspectives on the practical realities of feedback delivery. The quantitative strand found a statistically significant, large effect of feedback type on motivation gain, with process-oriented developmental feedback outperforming task-specific corrective feedback, which in turn outperformed general praise. The qualitative strand identified workload, feedback literacy, summative accountability pressure, and the relational value of individualised feedback as the principal factors shaping teachers’ capacity to sustain process-oriented feedback in practice. Together, these findings provide classroom-based, mixed-methods evidence in support of theoretical predictions from self-determination theory, achievement goal theory and feedback intervention theory, within a contemporary English secondary context.

Three contributions in particular are worth restating. First, the dissertation offers a direct, within-unit comparison of three named feedback types using a validated motivational measure, addressing a specific gap identified in the literature review. Second, it corroborates, in an English GCSE setting, theoretical predictions largely developed and tested elsewhere, extending their applicability. Third, by combining this comparison with teacher interviews, it links a motivational outcome to the everyday professional constraints, workload, feedback literacy and accountability pressure, that determine whether the theoretically preferred feedback type can realistically be delivered at scale.

6.2 Recommendations for Practice

  • Departmental feedback policies should prioritise fewer, higher-quality developmental comments over frequent but generic praise-based marking, reallocating marking time towards depth rather than frequency.
  • Schools should explicitly teach pupils how to use developmental feedback (for example, structured self-assessment prompts), rather than assuming feedback literacy is already present.
  • Senior leadership teams should review whether internal moderation and reporting requirements can be met without requiring every piece of formative work to carry a visible grade, to reduce the tension teachers described between formative and summative demands.
  • Initial teacher education and continuing professional development should explicitly address the evidence against person-focused praise as a primary feedback mode, alongside practical strategies for delivering process-oriented feedback within realistic time constraints.
  • Because this study’s benefits emerged after repeated exposure across four tasks, departments should treat process-oriented feedback and pupil self-assessment training as a taught routine embedded across a scheme of work, rather than as an occasional add-on to individual pieces of marking.

6.3 Limitations

As detailed in section 3.8, cluster-level allocation, a six-week timeframe, an adapted but not independently validated outcome measure, and a two-school, single-region sample limit the strength of causal claims and the generalisability of findings beyond broadly similar secondary settings.

6.4 Suggestions for Future Research

Future research would benefit from individual-level randomisation where practicable, a longer intervention period to assess whether motivational gains are sustained into subsequent academic years, replication across a wider range of school types and subjects beyond English, and direct measurement of whether motivational gains translate into attainment differences over a full examination cycle.
