A systematic review is the most rigorous form of literature review: rather than reading around a topic and writing up whatever seems relevant, it follows a transparent, pre-defined method designed so that another researcher could repeat the search and reach broadly the same set of studies. That method typically starts with a written protocol, a focused research question — often framed using PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) in health and social science — a comprehensive search across named databases, explicit criteria for which studies are included or excluded, a documented PRISMA flow of how many records were found and why others were removed, formal quality appraisal of the included studies, and a structured synthesis of what the evidence shows overall. Nursing, public health, psychology and social work Masters programmes set systematic reviews because the method itself is what is being assessed: examiners are checking for a defensible, reproducible search of the evidence, not just persuasive writing about a topic.
The rigour is the point. A systematic review protocol is often registered or at least written up before the search begins, precisely so the criteria for including and excluding studies cannot be adjusted later to favour a preferred conclusion. This matters most in fields where practice decisions follow directly from the evidence base — a nurse deciding between two wound-care interventions, or a public health team weighing a screening programme, needs to trust that the review in front of them was not quietly shaped around a result the authors wanted to find.

If a module handbook uses the words "systematic," "PRISMA" or "search strategy," a narrative review will not meet the brief, however well written it is — the marking criteria are checking for method, not just argument. Some briefs ask for a "systematic-style" or "rapid" review, a lighter version that borrows the transparency of a full systematic review — a documented search and clear criteria — without every step of formal quality appraisal; if the brief uses that language, confirm with the module tutor exactly which steps can be scaled back, since expectations vary between departments.
PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) gives a standard sequence most UK systematic reviews follow. Begin with a clearly framed question, usually in PICO form, and a written protocol stating the criteria before searching. Search two or more relevant databases using documented search terms and Boolean operators, recording exactly how many records each search returned. Screen titles and abstracts against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, then screen the full text of anything that passes, recording reasons for every exclusion — this is the information a PRISMA flow diagram displays. Appraise the quality of each included study using a recognised tool appropriate to its design. Extract data into a consistent table covering sample, method, intervention and outcome for every study. Finally, synthesise the findings — thematically if the studies are too varied for statistical pooling, or via meta-analysis where the data allow it — and discuss what the body of evidence shows, including its limitations. Keep a decision log throughout — a simple record of why each borderline study was included or excluded — because supervisors and examiners frequently ask about specific studies at the margins, and being able to justify each call from the log is far more convincing than reconstructing the reasoning from memory afterwards.
