My view is that the ‘versus’ in nature versus nurture is somewhat misleading, because in almost every case researchers now study, genetic and environmental factors interact rather than compete. Twin and adoption studies consistently show that traits such as general cognitive ability or extraversion have a substantial heritable component, but heritability estimates only describe variation within a specific population and environment — they don’t mean a trait is fixed or unaffected by experience (Chen and Woolf, 2019).

A good example is height: it is highly heritable within a well-nourished population, yet the average height of a population can rise significantly across a few generations purely because of improved childhood nutrition. Something similar applies to psychological traits. A child with a genetic predisposition toward anxiety may express that predisposition very differently depending on whether their environment is stable and supportive or chaotic and unpredictable — this is often called a gene-environment interaction, rather than a simple additive effect of the two factors.

I think the more useful question for psychology students isn’t nature or nurture, but which specific gene-environment interactions matter for a given outcome, and at which developmental stage. Early childhood appears to be a period when environmental input has particularly strong and sometimes lasting effects on brain development, which suggests timing matters as much as the raw balance between genes and environment.

It’s also worth noting that heritability estimates themselves can shift as environments change. If a society becomes more equal in terms of access to good nutrition, healthcare, and education, then more of the remaining variation in an outcome like educational attainment will, almost mechanically, be attributable to genetic differences, purely because environmental variation has shrunk. That is a statistical artefact of how heritability is calculated, not evidence that genes have suddenly become more influential, and I think it’s one of the most commonly misunderstood points in this whole debate.

That said, I recognise this interactionist position can feel like it avoids answering the original question directly. If someone pushed me to give a rough split for something like personality, I genuinely wouldn’t know how to defend a specific number without oversimplifying a much messier reality. Hi Daniel, I like your nutrition and height example — it’s a clear way of showing why heritability doesn’t mean fixed. To answer your closing question, I’d actually push back slightly and suggest that some very basic reflexive behaviours, like the rooting reflex in newborns, look close to purely genetic, since they appear reliably before there has been much opportunity for learning (Osei, 2020). But I agree that as soon as we move to anything like personality, intelligence, or mental health, the interaction model fits the evidence far better than picking a side.

One thing I’d add to your post is the idea of gene-environment correlation, not just interaction. Children with certain genetic predispositions may actively seek out or create environments that reinforce those predispositions — for example, a naturally sociable toddler might elicit more social interaction from caregivers, which then further shapes their social development. That makes it even harder to cleanly separate the two factors statistically, because the environment itself is partly shaped by the genes we’re trying to study.

That statistical point about shrinking environmental variation is a really good addition too, because it explains why headlines sometimes claim a trait has become ‘more genetic’ over time, when actually what has changed is how equal the environment has become, not the underlying biology itself. I think that distinction alone would clear up a lot of confusion in how heritability gets reported in the media.
