Research Questions

Following are the set of research questions that will be answered in this study:

  • What are the key symptoms of depression?
  • What is the impact of depression on the extrinsic motivation level of individuals?

Rationale

Depression is one of the growing mental health illnesses. Despite the various medical treatments that are offered to patients, it remains undiagnosed. However, according to the study conducted by Bower et al. (2013), it was found that the intensity of depression varies from individual to individual.

There are several symptoms of depression which can help to identify the severity of the issue but one of the common symptoms of depression is persistent mood swings, loss of interest and motivation towards work. Most patients who are suffering from depression face difficulty in concentrating on work or making decisions.

In the light of the study conducted by Fried and Nesse (2015), it was found that common symptoms of depression are lack of concentration and low mood. Thus, the following study will shed light on the symptoms of depression and their impact on the motivation level of individuals. The purpose of selecting this topic was to determine the common symptoms of depression that are faced by individuals and how it affects their motivation toward different tasks.

Method, design and data analysis strategy

For the following study, the researcher will collect primary data from normal people and not clinically diagnosed people through a survey questionnaire. The questionnaire will be shared through online platforms for the respondents. The results will be analyzed through frequency analysis whereas Beck Intervention Depression (BID-II) will also be used to measure the level of depression among the participants. According to Horowitz and Goodman (2005), it is a long form consisting of 21 questions which identify specific symptoms among individuals suffering from depression.

The sample size for the survey will be 100 normal individuals who are not clinically diagnosed with depression. Factor analysis and frequency analysis through SPSS will be conducted to interpret and analyze the results. The researcher will ensure that the information of respondents is not shared externally with anyone and the consent form will be signed.
