An essay has three core components: an introduction that presents the thesis, a main body of paragraphs developing supporting arguments, and a conclusion that summarises findings. A standard academic essay is typically five paragraphs long.
The introduction sets context, narrows to a clear thesis statement and outlines the essay’s direction, usually in one paragraph. Our essay structure guide explains how each component fits together and how much space to give each one.
The main body usually holds three paragraphs, each built around one point, supporting evidence and analysis linking back to the thesis. Longer essays add more body paragraphs rather than lengthening each one excessively.
The conclusion restates the thesis in new words, synthesises the main points and closes without introducing fresh evidence. Some essays also include a reference list or bibliography as a final, separate component.
If you’re unsure how to divide word count between these parts for your specific assignment, our topic and outline support can map out a balanced, well-proportioned structure for your essay.
