The dissertation is an essential document in the academic career of a master or doctoral student. The thesis is a comprehensive document encompassing the research work of the student. A lot of students attempt to achieve a higher degree, but they are unable to see it until the end.  One might come across several candidates who failed to receive a graduate degree and upon asking they will tell you that, I failed my dissertation. There are numerous reasons for failure at post-grad studies, and most of these accuse students in one way or another. However, there are some extraordinary circumstances where a candidate is struck with a tragedy and cannot continue.

One should consider his/her circumstances before going for higher education and its challenges. Some of the most common reasons for failure at graduate level studies are discussed here. Approximately, 40 to 50 percent of candidates fail in Ph.D. and around 20-30 percent collapse in completing master-level courses due to various reasons.

Lack of research ideas

A lot many students excel in course work and clear the course work with relative ease. During this time, they seem to enjoy the process and do not heed an ear to prepare for the second daunting portion of the degree program-The research. Many students leave the program because they find the research world overwhelming. Some students can’t even find a topic for research. Lack of ideas is one of the significant reasons for failure.

Failing dissertation defense

When you meet a candidate, who failed a doctoral study, they will tell you that I failed my dissertation. There are two defenses generally a student needs to successfully manage, one at the start when he/she presents his research proposal. Second after the research. Later is most vital as it comes at the end of the degree program, and candidates have to defend two to three years’ worth of research. The failure at this stage is due to incomplete research; candidates cannot conclude the investigation, unsatisfactory results.

The non-serious attitude of candidates

Top tier academic degrees are demanding and require full-fledged focus from the candidates. Such students who enroll in an advanced degree program just for the sake of getting a degree are destined to fail.

Unbalanced study and work-life

A lot of overseas/native students need to work alongside their education to meet their expenses. In the process, they get so indulged that they pay very little attention to their studies and tip the scale towards failure.

Unacademic approach to tackle dissertation

Many students do not pay proper attention to their research work. They want to pace through the research and get it done. This approach leads to failure. Candidates attempt plagiarism to complete the requirements of the dissertation.

Non-supportive supervisors

If you are lucky, you will get a professor who genuinely cares for progress. Some candidates fail at research due to a lack of support from supervisors. Humans are found in all the ways one can imagine. Sometimes prejudice can take better of the supervisors, and in the process, students get undeserved punishments. Lack of coordination is also a significant cause of failure.

There can be other conditions for the failure of students in extraordinary circumstances.
