Your Qualifications
Points follow the UCAS Tariff. Universities set their own entry requirements and some do not use the Tariff at all — always confirm the exact points and offer terms with your chosen university and at ucas.com.
What is a UCAS Tariff Points Calculator?
This calculator adds up your UCAS Tariff points from A Levels, AS Levels, the Extended Project (EPQ), BTEC Nationals and Scottish Highers, so you can see the total score most UK universities and colleges use to compare applicants on the UCAS Tariff.
How to Use the UCAS Tariff Points Calculator
Choose each qualification from the dropdown — A Level, AS Level, EPQ, a BTEC National or a Scottish Higher.
Pick the grade you achieved or expect; the points update automatically for that qualification.
Use "Add Qualification" to list every subject you are counting, and "Remove" to delete any row.
Read your total UCAS Tariff points, then compare it with your chosen course's entry requirements.
How UCAS Tariff Points Work
The UCAS Tariff converts your qualifications and grades into a single points score. Each qualification has a size band and each grade a value, so an A Level at grade A is worth 48 points while an AS Level at grade A is worth 20. Universities that use the Tariff set offers either in points, for example 112 points, or in grades, for example BBB, and many list both.
| Qualification | UCAS Tariff Points by Grade |
|---|---|
| A Level | A*=56, A=48, B=40, C=32, D=24, E=16 |
| AS Level | A=20, B=16, C=12, D=10, E=6 |
| Extended Project (EPQ) | A*=28, A=24, B=20, C=16, D=12, E=8 |
| BTEC Nat. Subsidiary Diploma | D*=56, D=48, M=32, P=16 |
| BTEC Nat. Diploma | D*=112, D=96, M=64, P=32 |
| BTEC Nat. Extended Diploma | D*=168, D=144, M=96, P=48 |
| Scottish Higher | A=33, B=27, C=21, D=15 |
| Scottish Advanced Higher | A=56, B=48, C=40, D=32 |
Not every university uses the Tariff, and some courses ask for specific subjects or minimum grades rather than a points total. Treat your score as a guide and always read the official entry requirements for each course you apply to.
Which Qualifications Count Towards the Tariff?
The Tariff covers a wide range of Level 3 qualifications beyond those listed here, including the International Baccalaureate, Access to HE Diplomas and many vocational awards. This calculator focuses on the most common UK qualifications, so use the official UCAS Tariff tool to check anything not shown.
