What is an Assignment Grade Calculator?

An Assignment Grade Calculator works out the overall mark for a module by combining each assessment's score with its weighting, then translates that weighted average into a UK Honours classification — First, Upper Second (2:1), Lower Second (2:2), Third or Fail. You can also flip it around to find the mark you still need on your remaining assessments to reach a target grade.

How to Use the Assignment Grade Calculator

1

Pick a mode — "Module Average" for your grade now, or "What Mark Do I Need?" to plan ahead.

2

Add each assessment with its weight (%) and the mark you scored (%).

3

In "What Mark Do I Need?", also enter your target overall percentage.

4

Read your weighted grade, classification and how far you sit from the next boundary.

How Weighted Assignment Grades Work

A weighted assignment grade multiplies each assessment's mark by its weight before dividing by the total weight, so a 50% final exam pulls your overall grade twice as hard as a 25% essay. Most UK undergraduate modules sit on the standard Honours boundaries below.

Classification Overall Mark
First-Class Honours70% and above
Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1)60% – 69.99%
Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2)50% – 59.99%
Third-Class Honours40% – 49.99%
FailBelow 40%

Postgraduate modules use their own Pass, Merit and Distinction bands, and some universities apply borderline or rounding rules, so treat the classification as a guide and confirm against your course regulations.

What Mark Do I Need to Hit My Target?

Switch to "What Mark Do I Need?" to plan ahead. Enter the assessments you have already completed with their weights and marks, add your target overall percentage, and the calculator shows the average mark you need across your remaining weight. If that figure comes back above 100%, the target is no longer reachable from your current position — so you can set a realistic goal instead. Our essay writing service can help you turn a tough final assessment into a strong, well-referenced model answer.

Assignment Grade Calculator FAQs

Each assessment's mark is multiplied by its weight, those products are added together, then divided by the total weight — so a 50% exam counts far more towards your module grade than a 10% quiz.
Switch to "What Mark Do I Need?", enter the results and weights you already have plus your target overall percentage, and the calculator returns the average mark required across your remaining weight.
An assignment grade is a weighted average of every assessment in the module, so the weights should represent the whole module and total 100%. If they do not, the tool warns you and still estimates a grade from what you have entered.
It is a close estimate. Universities may round, cap resits, or apply their own borderline rules, so always confirm the final figure against your module handbook or results portal.
Yes. The weighted-average maths is identical, though postgraduate pass marks and bands differ — a Merit or Distinction scheme replaces the undergraduate 2:1 and First boundaries, so treat the classification labels as a guide.
