How We Estimate Pages
Our baseline is Times New Roman, 12pt, single-spaced, at roughly 500 words per page — a widely used academic standard. Double-spacing roughly halves that to around 250 words per page, with 1.5-line spacing sitting in between.
Arial and Calibri are wider fonts, so they typically fit fewer words per page than Times New Roman at the same size. All figures are estimates — actual page counts also depend on your margins, headings and any images.
Quick Reference: Words to Pages (Double-Spaced)
| Word Count | Pages (Approx.) |

| 1,500 words | 6 pages |
| 2,000 words | 8 pages |
| 2,500 words | 10 pages |
| 5,000 words | 20 pages |
| 10,000 words | 40 pages |
Figures use Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced, at approximately 250 words per page.
How Universities Count Words
Word count policies vary by institution and by module, so always check your handbook. As a general guide:
- Main text (introduction, body, conclusion) — counted.
- In-text citations and direct quotations — usually counted.
- Footnotes and endnotes — varies by university.
- Bibliography or reference list — usually not counted.
- Appendices, tables and figure captions — usually not counted, but check your guidance.

Words to Pages FAQs
How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words?
Double-spaced, at the standard 250 words per page, 1,000 words is about 4 pages. Single-spaced, at roughly 500 words per page, the same 1,000 words is about 2 pages.
Does Font Choice Really Change the Page Count?
Yes. Arial and Calibri are wider than Times New Roman, so the same word count typically fills slightly more pages in those fonts at an equivalent size.
Should I Count References and Quotations in My Word Count?
It depends on your university. Many exclude the bibliography and appendices but include quotations and in-text citations — always check your module handbook to be sure.
What is the Difference Between 1.5 and Double Spacing?
Double spacing roughly halves the words that fit on a page compared with single spacing. 1.5-line spacing sits between the two, fitting more text than double but less than single.
Are These Page Estimates Exact?
No, they are estimates. Margins, headings, images, tables and your word processor’s default settings will all shift the real page count slightly either way.
